the recipient has a job or is going to school? I am not against financial assistance IF it was everywhere the way it is now in Virginia:
1. There are very strict eligibility requirements. It’s hard but fair and ensures that people can’t just “ride the system.”
2. If a person DOES receive assistance, they must get a job, HAVE a job, attend school or attend training provided by the welfare office or the benefits will be cut off. This ensures their time receiving assistance will be short. If they have a disability or an illness, it must be a DOCUMENTED one with appropriate paperwork.
There are more guidelines but that’s the general gist of it. There are more I think should also be in there that aren’t. Those are:
1. YOU MUST BE AN AMERICAN CITIZEN TO RECEIVE ANY ASSISTANCE.
2. Drug and alcohol abuse does not count as a disability. If you want assistance, you must go to rehab FIRST.
My main point here is that if a person has a job and simply doesn’t make enough money to get by or some similar situatiom, they should be entitled to assistance, as they are paying money into it, so to speak. I realize all areas are not like Northern VA and might be far more depressed economically but even still, money can be used to create training programs, etc. My husband is from a suburb of St. Louis. EVERYONE there receives assitance (that’s why he moved here). The requirements to get assistance there are FAR less stringent than they are here. You don’t even have to show paperwork or pay stubs or anything and there is no job training requirement or anything to continue to receive benefits. They are not 20 miles from a huge city with many jobs. Why not create some programs to train people so they can go into the city and get a good job?
