Pros of Alcohol and Drug Abuse?

Question by : Pros of alcohol and drug abuse?
I’m having a debate on alcohol and drug abuse for my sociology class and my half of the debate are the pros. I certainly know that the functionalists would say that drug and alcohol abuse is good because it provides jobs for AA employees and provides greater economic flow. I’d actually like to know, are there any other pros besides the mentioned for the abuse of alcohol and drugs? Can the word “abuse” be used in a different context for alcohol and drugs? Please give me something to debate on the pros, thank you!
Okay, let me clarify my point of the debate: I WAS ASSIGNED THE HALF OF THE DEBATE WHICH IS THE PROS OF ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE. I didn’t just ask for the pros of health, I’m also asking for benefits it causes. Functionalists, Conflict theorists, anything really. It wasn’t my choice to be the pro party. Sorry if I didn’t clarify enough.

Why Don’t Presidential Canditates Discuss the US Drug Epidemic and the Dismal Failure of the Drug War?

Question by Lou B: Why don’t presidential canditates discuss the US drug epidemic and the dismal failure of the drug war?
This would require the policy makers to admit that most Americans self-medicate on some form of drug everyday, both legal and illegal. This is a drug addiction problem, not a law enforcement issue. Addiction is a disease. Until we treat it this way, the drug problem will never go away.
The politicians do not want to appear soft on “Law and Order” and will advocate more of the old failed policy, more jail time to suppress the symptoms, and not cure the problem.

What Is a Shopping Addiction And?

Question by : What is a shopping addiction and?
when would you consider it a financial problem?

Best answer:

Answer by Momperson
A shopping addiction is when you buy stuff you don’t need, and don’t even really like all that much, but you just keep putting it in the basket. It’s a financial problem when you buy junk but don’t have enough left for food, rent, utilities and gas for the car. If you are lying, hiding things you purchased and stealing money so you can keep on shopping, writing bad checks, running up the credit cards so you are paying one monthly payment by taking a cash advance on another one…I think you get the picture. There’s more, but why belabor the point. If you’re asking the question, chances are good you are addicted to shopping or love someone who is. It’s just like any other addiction, mostly an emotional problem with real life consequences. Get help for yourself or your loved one. Call shoppers anonymous. You can’t make it better with anger or guilt.

How to Overcome a Food Addiction?

Question by Sara: How to overcome a food addiction?
I’m an 18 year old female and I’ve struggled with food addiction since I was a child. I know how to diet and I know what foods and it what quantities I need to be eating to lose weight, but towards the end of the day I just can’t seem to help snacking. I really want to lose the last 20 or 30 pounds that I need, but I need some tips or something for distracting myself from grazing. I don’t know if it’s an oral fixation or what, but if anyone can give me some pointers on avoiding snacking towards the end of the day. Thanks!

Dealing With a Family Member With a Drug Addiction.. Help!!?

Question by smaceroni: Dealing with a family member with a drug addiction.. help!!?
OK my sister has been addicted to Ambien for about 4 years now. She has through detox and rehab twice and hasnt gotten better. She is still very much addicted and supoosed to be going into another detox/rehab. She has been supposed to go nor for 2 weeks but everyday comes up with new excuse or chickens out. I have been supportive or encouraging but now its getting hard for me to be that way cause it hard for me to believe that she is actually going to go. She gets mad when I try to give her “tough love”. She gets mad that my parents and I never went to some type of counseling to learn about her problem. She says that since I have never been addicted I dont know what its like. I understand that, but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to know that its going to be pure hell to go through detox and rehab and stay clean. I just dont know what to do or say to her anymore. Has anyone been in this situation? What should I say or do? She is 34 and Im 26
