JC’s Eye Candy for June 11th, 2012 – For those of you too young to remember, or for those of you old enough but whose persistent drug use altered your ability to recall, here’s a little throwback to the last time we were on our way toward losing a pro football team. In the late eighties the battle was between Mayor Vince Schoemehl, who wanted to build a new domed stadium downtown, and County Executive Gene McNary, who wanted to build a stadium out in Maryland Heights. While the two argued to no avail, Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill got tired of the whole thing and took off for Arizona. Well, at the annual “Gridiron Dinner,” a yearly gathering of local sports fat cats, politicians and other blowhards, McNary performed a song parody for the crowd about the ordeal. That song was never intended to leave that banquet hall, but I got my hands on it and put it to my own video and ran it on Channel Five News. Here we are, twenty-five years later, and facing the same problem. Ever get the idea that, even though our sports franchises might be moving, St. Louis itself, isn’t?
